Varithena

What is Varithena and How Does it Work?

Varithena, also known as polidocanol injectable foam, is a prescription medication utilized to address varicose veins stemming from issues within the great saphenous vein (GSV) and related veins in the leg’s GSV system. This treatment not only alleviates symptoms associated with varicose veins but also improves their appearance. Varithena is administered by a healthcare professional directly into the malfunctioning veins. This minimally invasive, nonsurgical approach does not require incisions, and while the injection site is usually numbed, additional anesthesia is typically unnecessary.

What Results Can I Expect with Varithena?

Clinical trials have demonstrated that Varithena effectively reduces varicose vein symptoms such as heaviness, swelling, achiness, throbbing, skin irritation, and itching. Furthermore, both patients and doctors have reported improvements in vein appearance following treatment with Varithena.

How Does Varithena Work?

During the procedure, Varithena is introduced into the malfunctioning vein through a small catheter or direct injection. The foam fills the targeted section of the vein, leading to the collapse of the diseased vein. Once collapsed, the foam is deactivated, and blood flow is redirected to healthier nearby veins.

What is the Treatment Duration?

Varithena treatment typically occurs as a same-day clinical procedure lasting less than an hour. After administration, patients can return home on the same day.

Are There Side Effects of Varithena Treatment?

Common side effects of Varithena include temporary leg pain or discomfort lasting up to one week, bruising, swelling at the injection site, skin discoloration such as brown staining, skin irritation, muscle spasms, sore joints, and very rarely, blood clots in the deep veins. Any persistent or bothersome side effects should be promptly reported to your doctor.

Which Types of Veins Can Varithena Treat?

Varithena can effectively address various varicose veins within the great saphenous vein (GSV) system, including tortuous (twisted) veins, veins above and below the knee, veins of small, medium, and large diameters, as well as veins previously treated with other methods.

How Many Treatments Might I Need?

While some patients may achieve satisfactory results with a single treatment, additional sessions may be necessary depending on the number and size of varicose veins. Treatments are typically spaced at least five days apart.

When Can I Resume Normal Activities?

Following Varithena treatment, patients can engage in light activities on the same day. However, heavy activities and workouts should be avoided immediately post-procedure. Regular walking for at least 10-30 minutes a day is recommended for the first month after treatment, along with the continuous use of compression stockings for two weeks.

Is Varithena Covered by Insurance?

Coverage for Varithena treatment may vary depending on the severity of varicose veins and associated symptoms. Consultation with our Harvard Trained Specialists at Relevium, can help determine eligibility and insurance coverage for treatment along with an effective treatment plan tailored for you to address specific needs and conditions.
